Hello, I just wanted to introduce this forum. This forum is here to discuss aspects of humor from a general level. Its aim is to discuss humor from a philosophical/scientific/psychological/cultural-theory level. Basically...we don't want to just be posting fart jokes but we want to be trying to understand how humor and other related phenomena work. When posting please try to reply to a topic that is related to what you want to discuss and if not you can start a new thread in the appropriate board. Remember that the aim of this discussion is also to archive and produce a body of knowledge (can we say collaborative text?) about humor that could potentially be referenced and so organization of ideas is rather important. Also, try to always be adding something useful or pertinent or interesting to a discussion be it through facts, questions, ideas or other theories you might have. If you agree or disagree with someone and want to share that... try to say why. Anyways this whole thing is an experiment so try to have fun with it and if you have any ideas how to improve this board please share (I have included a board called "meta-analysis" to discuss overarching ways this forum/community may want to develop). Also, as of starting this forum I noticed that Paul McGraw's Humor Research Lab actually intends (or intended) to start a forum basically along the same lines which was also to be called, "Understanding Humor". I did not copy them (I got the idea for the name from Understanding Media by Marshall Mcluhan and Understanding Comics by McCloud) and maybe I might even delete the board if they want...anyways they didn't start their board yet but this one is ready to go. Maybe they will join in this discussion or even take it over! But , in honor and reference to them I did post about their Benign Violation Theory which I find super interesting and a very powerful one.
