Do you know that joke about the Comedians' Secret Society? (Well I can't mention it and not tell it...)
After a particularly successful show, a young comic is approached by an old man who introduces himself as a fellow humour-lover. "I really enjoyed your set" the old man says, "so much so I'd like to invite you to join the Comedians' Secret Society".
"The Comedians' Secret Society? Wow, I've never heard of that!"
"...well, yeah."
The old man gives the young comic a card with an address on it. "Come around any time, and show this card when you get there".
Not wanting to seem over-eager, the comic puts the card away, but curiosity gets the better of him after a few days. He goes to the address on the card to find an inconspicuous building before him. He rings the bell and a posh butler answers. The comic shows him the card, the butler nods and lets him in.
Inside is wonderful, a gentleman's club in every way. It's relaxed, comfortable, classy. The comic looks around in awe, seeing all the legends hanging out together, and thinks man, he could get used to this. Just then a voice calls out a number, and in response the whole room erupts into laughter. A few minutes later the same thing happens again, and every few minutes it happens again.
"2,996"
"Hahaha!"
"1,435"
"Hahaha!"
"53"
"Hahaha!"
The comic is perplexed, and looking around for an explanation he spots the old man from the night before. He greets him and then asks, what's with the numbers being shouted out?
"Ah well, we've all been here so long, we know every joke there is. So to save time on telling them, we assigned every one a number" explains the old man.
"Wow, that's awesome!" says the young comic. "Say, what's the number of the joke about the Comedians' Secret Society?"
"Oh, that old one?" replies the old man, "That's number 32,451"
The young comic clears his throat, puts his hands around his mouth and calls out "32,451!"
Dead silence meets his call. Not so much as a titter out of the other comics. In the back room someone coughs awkwardly.
"Ahhh" says the old man, "It's the way ya tell 'em".
Terrible joke I know. But anyway I was thinking there could be a sub-forum not for taking ideas apart but just for posting...jokes. And categories of jokes even. Analysis not required. A repository of sorts, like the Comedians' Secret Society has. And hell, we could number them all too!
